Collaborations

Partners

Sekab has extensive collaboration with research institutes, universities, authorities, vehicle manufacturers and other companies in the forest and chemical industry. Our collaboration with the other companies in the Domsjö development area gives us a broad network within the forest and process industry.

SEKAB is a member of interest groups such as Svebio and BioFuelRegion. In these networks, we work together towards a sustainable future through a transition to renewable fuels.

Processum – The Biorefinery of the Future

The Domsjö development area has emerged as the hub for a cluster of companies within various parts of the process industry. SEKAB is one of these companies. We make up the associated company Processum together with other players in the chemical field, the municipality and the county administrative board.

Processum is also called the Biorefinery of the Future. The main areas of work are research coordination, business development and marketing. The idea behind Processum is to develop new products within a biorefinery concept. The collaboration takes place in projects and through regional presence as an industrial party.

Processum has been created to help the members interact in order to achieve a greater impact and synergy effects from their business. One of Processum’s tasks is to develop existing companies and work for the establishment of new companies with a focus on process chemistry, process technology and process control. What they have in common is the desire to utilise and refine the enormous renewable natural resources of the forest. Through innovative solutions, Processum’s members want to contribute to sustainable development and a greener society.

F3 Fossil Free Fuels

F3 is a knowledge centre for the development of renewable fuels for transportation in Sweden. F3 stands for “fossil free fuels”.

The Knowledge Centre supports and conducts research projects within the field of renewable fuels. Providing decision-makers with the best possible basis for continuing to drive developments in the area is also an important task.

F3 operates under the auspices of Chalmers Industrial Engineering and other participating players are the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Lund University, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and Umeå University. Umeå University also collaborates closely with Luleå University and the Energy Technology Centre in Piteå in this area, consequently their expertise will be also utilised within F3.

Together with the industry the other participants are the three research institutes: IVL the Swedish Environmental Research Institute, SP Sweden’s Technical Research Institute and Innventia. The industrial companies that currently support the centre are Preem, Perstorp, Göteborg Energi, E.ON Sweden, Scania, SEKAB E-Technology and Volvo Technology. The operations are also financed by the Swedish Energy Agency and the Västra Götaland region.

Unica

The Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA) is Brazil’s largest collective organisation representing sugar, ethanol and bio-electricity producers. UNICA’s members account for more than 50 per cent of all ethanol produced in Brazil and 60 per cent of all sugarcane production in the world.

The organisation acts both nationally and in the international arena. The main purpose is to strengthen the position of the Brazilian sugarcane industry as a modern supplier of ethanol, sugar and renewable electricity with a focus on sustainable development. At the same time, UNICA wants to strengthen the image of ethanol as a clean renewable fuel.

Taurus Energy

EKAB and Taurus Energy have a joint research and development cooperation on processes for extracting ethanol from cellulose, primarily the development of pentose fermenting yeast strains.

At SEKAB’s demonstration plant we have carried out several rounds of tests of Taurus Energy’s specially developed yeast strains which ferment sugars that are common in cellulose. Fermenting these sugars into alcohol is an important part of the work in creating a commercial process for the production of cellulose ethanol. Together, SEKAB and Taurus Energy have been able to demonstrate that the yeast strains function on an industrial scale.
