ONE OF EUROPE'S LEADING ETHANOL PLAYERS

In Domsjö near Örnsköldsvik, in the midst of the northern forests, lies the cradle of the Swedish chemical industry

SEKAB is one of sweden’s largest cleantech companies and is among europe’s leaders in the field of ethanol and biorefinery technology.

SEKAB recruits expert in biotechnology

Apr 14, 2014
Roberth Byström

SEKAB E-Technology has recruited Roberth Byström as its new expert on biotechnology. He will be working on the development and commercialisation of SEKAB’s technology platform CelluAPP®.

– I look forward to being involved in developing SEKAB’s technology to convert wood and agricultural waste into high-quality biofuels and chemical products. It is an exciting technology development which means that we will be able to reduce the need for fossil raw materials in the future, says Roberth Byström.

Roberth Byström comes most recently from a position as a development engineer at DomInnova, Domsjö Fabriker’s Department for Development, Research and Innovation. He was previously employed as a biotechnology engineer at SEKAB E-Technology between 2010 and 2012. Roberth Byström has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Umeå University.

There is great potential in using lignocellulose rich raw materials from the forestry and agricultural industries to produce environmentally friendly and renewable products for the chemical and fuel industries. At SEKAB E-Technology Roberth Byström will be working on the development and commercialisation of the CelluAPP® technology platform. The goal is to work together with customers and cooperation partners to offer the market a renewable and fossil-free alternative.

– We are very excited that Roberth Byström has returned to us at SEKAB E-Technology. Roberth’s expertise will be invaluable in our efforts to develop new technologies for the production of renewable products from lignocellulose, says Thore Lindgren, Executive Vice President of SEKAB E-Technology.

SEKAB E-Technology conducts advanced research at the Biorefinery Demo Plant in Örnsköldsvik which this year celebrates its 10th anniversary (formerly Ethanol Pilot). SEKAB E-Technology has, among other things, developed the technical process CelluAPP® which enables the biorefining of lignocellulose into high value products.

CelluAPP® is the name of the technology platform that SEKAB E-Technology has developed in order to produce renewable products from cellulose-based raw materials. The process involves using enzymes and microorganisms to break cellulose down into sugars to produce e.g. ethanol. With CelluAPP® technology cellulosic biomass such as corn residues, wood chips, straw and sugar cane bagasse can for example be converted into biofuels and chemical products.
