E85 is a fuel that consists of 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent petrol. It is intended for ethanol vehicles, known as FlexiFuel vehicles, that can run on pure ethanol, pure petrol or a mixture of these fuels. The addition of 15 per cent petrol is only required for cold starting during the winter months.
A FlexiFuel vehicle running on E85 emits half the nitrogen oxides compared with the use of petrol in the same vehicle. Emissions of hydrocarbons are about the same, irrespective of fuel used. The big difference however is that with E85, the emission of fossil carbon dioxide is reduced by approximately 80 per cent.
E85 can be bought at more than five hundred filling stations around Sweden.
