Environment and Quality

SEKAB works to promote sustainable alternatives and the revolutionising of the transport sector through the use of bioethanol. In addition to our contribution to sustainable development, the environmental impact of our operations is also of the utmost concern for us at SEKAB. Respect for the environment is always given priority over production. We have modern operations that incorporate the continual monitoring and follow-up of our impact on the environment.

SEKAB’s production and product transportation have an unavoidable impact on the environment through emissions into the air and water, for example. This impact is constantly monitored in order to identify potential problem areas. The company has identified the particular environmental issues relevant to our operations to be able to actively reduce their impact. Environmental impact includes everything related to activities, processes, products and services which have or may potentially have an impact on the environment.

The aspects of operations that are considered to have the greatest environmental impact are called ‘important environmental aspects’. These aspects comprise the main focus of our efforts concerning environmental protection and are followed up and reviewed regularly.

The most important environmental issues at present are:

 

• Emissions into the waterways of deoxygenating substances (TOC)
• Airborne emissions of highly degradable, volatile organic substances (VOC)
• The marine transport of raw materials and products to and from SEKAB
• Transport by road of raw materials and products to and from SEKAB
• Hazardous waste.

SEKAB continually strives to formulate its processes in such as way so as to minimise environmental impact. We also have an on-going focus on optimising our processes and improving the efficiency of our use of raw materials, energy and natural resources. A reduced reliance on chemicals and more efficient transportation are also important measures in rationalising SEKAB’s operations. By means of computerised process monitoring and adjustment, SEKAB has been able to significantly reduce its consumption of raw materials and energy, which has lessened its environmental impact. Out of concern for the environment, the company has also added a highly advanced gas scrubbing system to its production lines for acetaldehyde and acetic acid. As a result, purification of more than 99 per cent has been achieved. In addition, wastewater from chemical processing is treated in an anaerobic purification process. This has been shown to result in superior purification, and the resulting water has attained a status close to that of natural water.

Customers with specific quality requirements provide us with feedback on our work to ensure that we meet their most stringent demands.
