E85 is a fuel consisting of 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent petrol and a denaturating agent. This fuel is intended for so-called fuel-flexible cars, which run on E85, pure petrol or a mixture of the two. During the winter months there is a higher petrol content (25 per cent) to facilitate cold starts in low temperatures.
A fuel-flexble car which runs on E85 emits only half as much nitrogen oxide as the same vehicle driven using petrol. The release of hydrocarbons is comparable, regardless of the type of fuel used. The most significant difference is that E85 reduces fossil carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 80 per cent.
E85 is sold at about 1,400 stations throughout Sweden today.
