The Örnsköldsvik Biorefinery

Here we collaborate with other companies in a leading edge environment and infrastructure for the development of forest biorefinery.

The Gifts of Nature

Europe’s foremost biorefinery using raw materials from the forest as its base is to be found in Örnsköldsvik. Here is Sekab, one of several companies that convert renewable wood raw materials into different green products with widely different applications.

Our products are then further refined by our customers and are used in, among other things, the textile industry, medicine manufacture, foodstuffs, paints, propellants, building materials and hygiene products. The term biorefinery means to make the most of the constituent parts of the raw material and to thus make a variety of products; to make more of the tree.

Raw materials from the biorefinery are used to produce many different products:

  • Textiles
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Foodstuffs
  • Paints
  • Propellants
  • Building materials
  • Hygiene products

In Sweden, we have a long tradition of working and refining our forests, which has made us something of a global pioneer with respect to the forest industry. Utilising the raw materials of the forest in the best possible way and maximising the value of the product streams is what biorefinery is all about, a natural step for the Swedish forest and process industry. The forest has great potential and this we want to both manage and develop in a sustainable way.

An advanced biorefinery

The various product streams in the biorefinery are further refined into high-quality specialty products with many applications, such as in the manufacture of chemicals, biofuels, heat and brine media, technical ethanol, paints, viscose and building materials. Environmental issues are of vital importance in our biorefinery, all production takes place based on significant environmental considerations.

The various companies make use of each other’s process streams and also cooperate within areas such as energy supply, purification plant and other aspects of infrastructure.

The biorefinery can always be further developed and is therefore also a concept for the future, but here in Örnsköldsvik we have already made good progress in this direction.
