The seas of sustainability are stormy. 2025 has begun in a whirlwind of global shifts, primarily driven by a new U.S. administration that has pulled out of the climate agreement, rolled back sustainability regulations, halted stimulus packages for green investments, and engaged in a tariff tango with both neighboring countries and Europe.

Meanwhile, the new EU Commission has also announced regulatory easing including in sustainability reporting. However, a crucial difference is that the EU is simultaneously fully committing to the climate goals and is introducing new initiatives to stimulate demand for sustainable products.

All of this naturally sparks strategic discussions within companies. On one hand, there is no time to waste in reaching emission reduction targets often set to be reached in a first step by 2030. On the other hand, with regulatory pressure being rolled back, many worry that sustainability investments may no longer offer a competitive advantage.

It is therefore more important than ever to bring forward proof that sustainability is not just the best choice for the planet – it’s a competitive advantage, regardless of which way the political winds are blowing. Studies like the one from PwC are vital to show the actual effects of decarbonizing. Those of us offering fossil free solutions have work to do to describe the economic benefits of going green.

One good example that many believe that the there is no contradiction between doing good for the world and doing well as a business is that while the U.S. may have exited the Paris Agreement, nearly 3,000 American companies have joined the America is All In initiative, committing to continued efforts to ensure the country does its part to meet the climate goals.

So, let’s stay patient and remain focused. Companies that remain steadfast in their commitment to sustainability are likely to see long-term success and resilience.
