Bio Acetaldehyde from Sekab is used by industrial customers who want to reduce climate impact in their value chains by replacing fossil-based raw materials with bio-based alternatives. As a European producer, Sekab supplies Bio Acetaldehyde based on bio-based ethanol to customers within the European process industry.
The product is chemically identical to fossil-based acetaldehyde and has the same functional properties, but is based on bio-based ethanol and produced using renewable bioenergy. Bio Acetaldehyde can therefore be used as a drop-in solution in existing chemical processes.

What is acetaldehyde?

Acetaldehyde, also known as ethanal, is an organic chemical compound used as a chemical intermediate in a wide range of industrial applications. The substance is part of several chemical value chains and is used as a raw material in the production of other chemicals.

In its bio-based form, acetaldehyde has the same chemical structure and functionality as fossil-based acetaldehyde. The difference lies in the origin of the raw material.

Production of Bio Acetaldehyde

Acetaldehyde from Sekab is produced through catalytic oxidation of ethanol in a continuous industrial process. Production takes place in a closed system powered by renewable bioenergy. The process is designed to meet high requirements for safe handling and stable operation.

By combining renewable raw materials with renewable bioenergy, Sekab can offer acetaldehyde with the same chemical properties as fossil-based alternatives, but with a renewable origin and lower climate impact.

Handling and logistics

Acetaldehyde is a reactive chemical that requires planned handling and logistics. Sekab has extensive industrial experience in producing and supplying acetaldehyde and has established routines adapted to the properties of the substance at industrial scale.

Through controlled handling and planned logistics, acetaldehyde can be managed while maintaining quality and safety throughout the supply chain.

Bio-based raw material and climate data

Sekab’s Bio Acetaldehyde is based on 100 percent bio-based raw material and has a lower climate impact than fossil-based acetaldehyde.

Sekab provides verified climate calculations and CO₂ values that can be used in customers’ climate reporting.

Certification and traceability

Below are the certifications and documentation available for Bio Acetaldehyde from Sekab.

ISCC-certified production

Sekab is certified according to ISCC PLUS and uses ISCC-certified bio-based ethanol as a raw material. The certification covers raw material handling, mass balance and documentation, enabling Sekab to supply bio-based acetaldehyde with accompanying ISCC documentation.

About acetaldehyde

Acetaldehyde has a wide range of applications and is a raw material in the manufacture of many everyday products, such as paint binders, plasticisers and superabsorbents in baby diapers.

Acetaldehyde is also used in the manufacture of various types of building materials, fire protection paints, synthetic lubricants and explosives. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used, among other things, in the manufacture of vitamins, sleeping aids and sedatives. Acetaldehyde is also often used as a base when producing acetic acid, which is also a basic chemical with many uses.

In the food industry, Acetaldehyde is used in the manufacture of preservatives and flavourings and occurs naturally in fruit and fruit juices. Acetaldehyde arises naturally during fermentation and is found in low levels in foodstuffs such as milk products, soy products, pickled vegetables and non-alcoholic beverages.

FAQ about Bio Acetaldehyde

What is Bio Acetaldehyde used for?

Bio Acetaldehyde is an important intermediate used in the production of chemicals for a wide range of industries. Typical applications include pharmaceuticals, food ingredients, fragrances, flavours and specialty chemicals. Produced from bio-based ethanol, it offers the same chemical properties as fossil-based acetaldehyde while enabling customers to reduce the carbon footprint of their products.

How is acetaldehyde produced at Sekab?

Bio Acetaldehyde is produced by the controlled oxidation of bio-based ethanol. Sekab uses bioethanol from renewable feedstocks and combines efficient production with renewable electricity and verified sustainability data to deliver fossil-free acetaldehyde with a low product carbon footprint.

Why does acetaldehyde require specific handling and logistics?

Acetaldehyde is a highly reactive chemical that requires dedicated handling, storage and transportation to maintain product quality and ensure safe delivery. Sekab has extensive experience in handling acetaldehyde and works with established logistics solutions designed specifically for this product.

Does Bio Acetaldehyde have the same properties as fossil-based acetaldehyde?

Yes. Bio Acetaldehyde is chemically identical to fossil-based acetaldehyde and offers the same purity, quality and performance. It can be used as a drop-in replacement without changes to formulations, production processes or product performance.

The key difference is the origin of the raw material. Sekab’s Bio Acetaldehyde is produced from bio-based ethanol instead of fossil raw materials, resulting in a fossil-free product with a significantly lower product carbon footprint.

Is Sekab's Bio Acetaldehyde fully bio-based or mass balanced?

Sekab’s Bio Acetaldehyde is produced from 100% bio-based ethanol and is not a mass balance product. The renewable carbon in the product originates from bio-based feedstocks rather than fossil raw materials.

What is the product carbon footprint (PCF) of Bio Acetaldehyde?

The product carbon footprint depends on the feedstock used to produce the bioethanol. Sekab provides verified product carbon footprints for different feedstocks, giving customers transparent data for sustainability reporting and informed purchasing decisions. Read how the origin of the feedstock influences the Product Carbon Footprint.

Is a verified product carbon footprint available?

Yes. Sekab provides verified product carbon footprints calculated according to ISO 14067. The verified values can be used as part of customers’ sustainability reporting and Scope 3 calculations. See our pcf and all calculations here

What renewable feedstocks are used?

Sekab’s Bio Acetaldehyde is produced from bioethanol made from renewable feedstocks such as sugar cane and corn. The feedstock used influences the product carbon footprint, which is why Sekab reports verified values for different feedstocks.

Does Sekab use renewable energy in production?

Yes. Our production is powered by 100% renewable electricity, and steam is supplied through industrial symbiosis with the local energy provider. Together with bio-based feedstocks, this contributes to the low product carbon footprint of our chemicals.

How is traceability ensured?

Traceability is ensured throughout the entire value chain, from the sourcing of bioethanol to the delivery of the final product. Sekab works with carefully selected suppliers and documented supply chains to ensure transparency and reliable sustainability data.

This enables us to provide verified information about the origin of the raw material and supports our customers with documentation for sustainability reporting and regulatory requirements.

Which sustainability certifications does Sekab hold?

Sekab holds several internationally recognised certifications, including ISCC+, ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. We also offer Product Carbon Footprints verified according to ISO 14067, as well as Halal and Kosher certification for relevant products.
