Sweden is uniquely positioned to take the lead in the European chemical industry’s transformation. With a strong history of producing chemicals from renewable resources and a clear commitment to environmental and climate issues, we have all the prerequisites to drive change. Sweden benefits from access to renewable energy and abundant non-fossil raw materials, both of which are critical to the chemical industry’s transition.

With these favorable conditions, it’s natural for the Swedish chemical industry to assume a leadership role. After a year of intense discussions and evaluations of the opportunities and challenges, the industry has agreed on a roadmap that will help us reach net-zero emissions a full 12 years ahead of the European target.

This plan is specific to Sweden but could serve as a model for our broader region. The transition is crucial for how both the Swedish and European chemical industries can strengthen their competitiveness moving forward. Demand for sustainable raw materials is growing rapidly. Reports from McKinsey and PWC suggest that this will drive business, as more end-users are demanding lower emissions and renewable raw materials.

In conclusion, the message is clear: the chemical industry faces a significant challenge. Setting goals is one thing – achieving them will require hard work and determination.
