For years, we have talked about moving away from fossil resources primarily as a climate issue. Maybe we have been underselling it.

Fossil dependence is also business dependence. Recent geopolitical turbulence has once again shown how quickly it can turn into volatile prices, disrupted supply chains and business risk.

And our industry is starting to recognise this. Peter Voser makes the case that sustainability needs to move out of its separate box and into the decisions that actually run a business. You can see the same shift in the theme of this year’s EPCA Annual Meeting: Rethinking Resilience.

Because resilience is not just about weathering the next crisis. It is about building value chains that are less exposed when it hits.

So if replacing a fossil raw material lowers emissions, diversifies supply, meets customer demand and reduces risk, please stop calling it a sustainability initiative. It is a business initiative.

The good news is that you don’t have to wait for a new technology, a new roadmap or a new decade to get started. Fossil-free alternatives already exist, at industrial scale, today.

We know. We make them.

Want to make your value chain a little less fossil-dependent? Get in touch. We have a few ideas.
