Bio Ethyl Acetate carbon footprint

Sustainability is not just a part of our operations; it is the very core of our entire business. It goes beyond our bio-based products through our operations and further to reducing emissions in our value chains.

We want to give you an accurate, independently verified Product Carbon Footprint and have chosen to follow the standard ISO14067 to show that the cradle-to-gate emissions of our products are carbon negative.

Q&A

How come you offer different carbon emissions?

90% of the carbon footprint comes from the raw material. Our raw material is bio ethanol that comes from different feedstocks, mainly corn or sugar cane. The emissions can differ for the same end product due to the different raw materials and their individual ways of growing and capturing CO2. The emission also depends on where the raw material is grown.

What does biogenic uptake mean?

Biogenic uptake refers to the process by which living organisms, particularly plants, absorb and store carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere during their growth. As we use plants such as corn or sugarcane for our raw material, this lowers the products total footprint throughout the lifecycle.

How do you calculate the carbon footprint of your products?

We have chosen to use the ISO 14067 methology to calculate the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with a product’s lifecycle, from raw material extraction to disposal. Our use of the methology is third party verified.

ISO 14067 is an international standard that specifies principles, requirements, and guidelines for quantifying and reporting the carbon footprint of products (CFP).

Why is there another carbon footprint on the ISCC certificate than the ones showed here.

If you purchase our products with an ISCC certificate, the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) will be calculated according to their methodology, which does not include biogenic carbon uptake. Each ISCC certificate has a unique number linked to the specific batch of raw materials used in your product.

The emission value shown here is calculated based on ISO 14067 and reflects a yearly average for products made from corn or sugarcane.

Are you connected to Together for Sustainability?

As a producer of bio-based industrial chemicals, Sekab stands out in this context because we have chosen a renewable, sustainable path from the beginning, using bioethanol as our raw material. Together for Sustainability is an initiative from the chemical industry adjusted for fossil based chemicals.

Sekab products’ GHG emissions value cradle to gate, including biogenic CO2 uptake reveals a negative carbon footprint. This is thanks to the biogenic CO2 uptake inherent in bio-based products, a clear advantage over fossil-based alternatives, which typically report positive emissions.
